Automobile Insurance

THE WINDING ROAD OF AUTOMOBILE INSURANCE

A personal automobile insurance policy is an important part of today’s mobile society. However, like any type of insurance, there is a maze of options, terminology, and costs associated with insuring your automobile.

Here’s a quick look at some key components of a typical automobile insurance policy.

Comprehensive: This is the “plain vanilla” of automobile insurance. Also referred to as auto liability coverage, it protects the “named insured” from liabilities as listed in the insurance contract. Liabilities typically covered include injury to others or damage to the property of others as a result of a car accident. In addition, comprehensive coverage generally protects the insured while driving someone else’s car or rental vehicle.

Collision: Although this type of coverage can considerably add to a policy’s overall cost, it’s a valuable component, especially if you own a newer or higher priced automobile. Also referred to as auto physical damage coverage, it covers the damage to or theft of the automobile insured through the policy. Generally, coverage pays for repairs or provides for the replacement or reimbursement of a “totaled” or stolen vehicle, not to exceed the vehicle’s fair market value (FMV).

Uninsured Motorist Coverage: This coverage helps pay for damages or medical expenses (exceeding the limits of medical payments coverage) in an accident caused by an uninsured motorist. Because some states do not require automobile insurance, or some “risk takers” illegally drive an uninsured vehicle in a state where automobile coverage is mandatory, there is always the chance you could be in an accident and the other party involved is uninsured. If the other party is at fault, you’ll be hard-pressed to recover damages. For this reason, uninsured motorist coverage is often a valuable addition to a policy.

Medical Payments: Some policies have separate costs for coverage associated with medical expenses of the named insured or others riding in the insured vehicle. In many cases, these expenses are covered even if the named insured is not at fault, or if the named insured is not driving the vehicle. Coverage is generally limited to a stated dollar amount in the policy (e.g., 2,500 per person).

Repair or Replacement Coverage: This coverage guarantees that repairs to your car will be made at full replacement cost or your car will be replaced with a new model that is comparably equipped. Availability of this coverage varies from state to state.

Motor Vehicle Loan/Lease (Gap) Coverage: This coverage pays the balance of your lease or loan if there is a total loss to your car.

Extended Non-Owned: This type of coverage is for use when the insured also has an owned automobile. Extends liability coverage to a non-owned vehicle (such as a corporately owned vehicle) which is furnished for regular use.

Named Non-Owner: This type of coverage is for use when the insured does not own an automobile. Provides liability coverage for a non‑owned vehicle (such as a corporately owned vehicle) which is furnished for regular use.

Get the Right Insurance Coverage for Your Vehicles
The right auto insurance policy can help get you back on the road quickly if your car is damaged or destroyed by accident, fire, theft, or other covered events. Your policy may also provide protection against medical and legal expenses resulting from injury, loss of life, or property damage caused by an accident involving your vehicle. Many people supplement their auto insurance coverage with personal umbrella liability insurance for broader protection.

An auto insurance policy is a contract between you and an insurance company. You pay a premium, and in exchange, the insurance company promises to pay for specific car-related financial losses during the term of the policy. Work with us to determine the best coverage for you.

Classic Car Insurance

Your Classic Car Is an Icon. Insure It Well.

Classic car insurance works similarly to a regular auto policy, with the benefit of having coverage for your vehicle’s agreed value and its specifications such as usage, storage, and more. It takes more than age to make it a classic. A collector car isn’t just a way to get around. It’s an investment that will continue to appreciate in coming years.

Not all classic or antique cars are used the same. We will work with you to select the appropriate policy to accommodate coverage needs, miles driven, vehicle age, and vehicle modifications to make sure you have the best policy to meet your needs.

Motorcycle Insurance

Like driving a car, if you drive a motorcycle on public roads in Pennsylvania you must have insurance.  Riders must be able to show proof of insurance when requested by a law enforcement official or they will be required to do so in court.  On top of requiring a minimum liability policy, Pennsylvania is a ”no fault” state. That means the insurance company of each party involved in an accident is going to pay for damages and injuries to that party. If you do not have coverage, you will have to pay for everything out-of-pocket. As if that is not enough, Pennsylvania requires that riders carry a personal injury policy on top of basic coverage and allow motorists to opt out of the no fault requirements in favor of ”at fault” insurance.

According to the Pennsylvania Administrative Code, the minimum motorcycle insurance requirements are as follows:

  • Collision-this protection covers your bike in a collision with another vehicle or a stationary object.
  • Uninsured/under-insured motorist – With that many uninsured drivers you can understand why you need this coverage. As if worrying about uninsured drivers isn’t enough, you must also be aware of under-insured drivers. An uninsured/under-insured motorist policy protects you in either case.
  • Comprehensive – this protection covers non-collision mishaps such as “Acts of God”–fire, wind, storm, flood, etc–and criminal activity like theft or vandalism.

Umbrella

Umbrella Insurance is extra liability insurance that goes above and beyond the limits of the insured’s property, vehicle, business, or watercraft insurance. It can protect you against some lawsuits not covered by your other insurance policies. One example would be if you were sued over an accident involving a boat that you rented while vacationing in Europe. It also provides coverage for some claims that may be excluded by other liability policies including, but not limited to: false arrest, libel, slander, and liability coverage on any rental units that you may own.

The more that your assets increase or the more income that you accrue, the more likely it is that you would benefit from an umbrella insurance policy.

There are many money saving discounts that are available if you are already have other insurance policies with AIA-Yerkes Insurance Agency. The cost of an umbrella policy depends on how much underlying insurance you have and the kind of risk you represent. The greater the underlying liability coverage, the less expensive the policy will be since you would be less likely to need the additional insurance. An umbrella policy is the absolute best buy in the insurance business. It can cost as little as $150 to $200 for the first $1 million of coverage, then about $100 for each additional $1 million.
